Football, the Queen and price cap fallout

Here’s a roundup of the energy and net zero stories that caught our attention this week:

Energy

The biggest news last week was the price cap increases set for 1 April and the government rebates to help households keep the lights on. So what has been the resulting response? Mixed…

Firstly, households don’t really know what to expect. There have been some efforts to help consumers understand what to expect (more here), however  the real solution is coming next week! Keep an eye out for further announcements.

Secondly, the rebate assumes that wholesale prices will come down but no one other than Rishi Sunak is confident they will… This means that whilst we might have the pressure eased now, it may hit us harder in due course.

Discussion about this issue can be read here and here

Would a windfall tax on the oil giants be the right solution? Or to remove green levies from our bills?

It won’t just be us watching and waiting to see - the Queen is likely to be too! She is expected to see her energy bill go up by £2m to an incredible £4m!!!

It’s not just energy prices for which the government is coming under fire (and I don’t mean Partygate) . It’s also about failing to cut emissions from home heating, as outlined in a latest government report.

Net zero

In happier news, nearly 47% of the country’s electricity demand in January was covered by zero carbon sources of power. This was down to Storm Malik and Storm Corrie producing new wind records.

Spurs have pledged to become net zero by 2040. See how your favourite club ranks in the latest sustainability table.

Elon Musk has promised autonomous driving capability within the next 18 months. Again - he has done so every year since 2014.

I’m still wondering when we will get cyber trucks on the road in the UK…

And ever wondered how much you might save in fuel costs with an EV? Some broad guidance is here but keep an eye out for personalised guidance from us coming soon. Headline is that you could save 69%.
